When Frank Sinatra hosted the Welcome Home Elvis television special, he was trying to maintain a measure of hip by rubbing a little Elvis on. CD reissue of “The Complete Sun Sessions” has ended 12 years later with the publication of “Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley. Reading Peter Guralnick’s Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley is like watching a train wreck about to happen. You know what’s.
Whereas the author’s earlier book, Last Train to Memphis, brought home the story of a young boy from a poor family who was blessed with unnatural talent and timing rising almost overnight to unimaginable heights of fame and fortune, Careless Love details his tragic end. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. While this may be down to Elvis’s life becoming less focused and more isolated, the fact that the narrative follows the same trajectory isn’t particularly pleasurable to read.
It was a shrunken world that he inhabited, a sealed environment that stifled creativity. Jun 08, Scott rated it it was amazing Shelves: I read this book to find out more about his personal life instead of his music career and was surprised to find out many details.

At least Parker seemed to see Elvis’ careles and want him to be financially successful and pushed for bigger and better venues, like his initial plan to have Elvis pioneer pay-per-view concerts, even as he racked up huge fees on his own side of various d Heartbreakingly detailed and comprehensive. Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley
Guralnick’s two volume Elvis Carelesss biography is likely to stand the test of time as the definitive account. That you’re just covering for him, even after he’s dead. Musically he was a genius, perhaps a savant, and that remained true for over a decade after he had served in the military.
I just wish he had been able to hold on long enough to enjoy a renaissance like Johnny Cash or Roy Orbison. Elvis was, for all his celebrity, not a real mature fellow, and she was just what he needed. His loss of his beloved mother seemed to leave him without a guide. The one time I visited New York City, I got a garrulous cab driver and asked if he had driven for celebrities.
He deserved to be appreciated on his own terms.
Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley by Peter Guralnick
He never let anyone help ubmaking, and the power of his empire and place in society allowed him to get away with whatever he wanted. As a reader, it was hard for me to see how clueless, egotistical, and selfish Elvis was towards himself and how the people who lo Careless Love continues after the first book of Elvis’ life, The Last Train to Memphis, by the same author.
Terry I wouldn’t categorize myself as a big fan of Elvis – I enjoyed his music, but I’m pretty clear eyed about him as a person and entertainer.
There is such tragedy to the story of Elvis’s final years and Guralnick is able to perfectly capture this without holding back. He lived by night – a strangely passive existence, despite the amphetamines – with endless reruns of Monty Python and bizarre attempts to assert himself.
Not helping his emotional state were his father, who quickly stole a new girlfriend from a friend in the Army, and his fame reached a level where photographers were snapping pictures at his house as he cried in his father’s arms.
There is no such word as “unmaking” in the English language. Parker kept the business going and ensured that the dollars flowed but it may have been a very high price for Elvis to pay. And it quickly gets ugly, as Elvis corrodes into a lazy, strung-out fat kid, distracted by go-carts, badge collecting, and playing cowboys and Indians with his sycophantic Memphis Mafia, all carelrss while derailing his own career, despite an incredibly forgiving fan base.
In hindsight Elvis’ downfall is almost as sudden as his rise and the author once again does a masterful job of researching and writing every detail. The end flips between Presley as tired commodity and a man trapped by his archetype.
It implies that you don’t really trust the man, or res There is no such word as “unmaking” in the English language. For us, that look behind the scenes is appealing, even if there is something unseemly about the possible betrayal the books represent, provides. I came to read this through a combination of opportunity combined with respect for that historical role of this legendary musical figure. If you are going to read an Elvis bio, this is the one.
It continues through a string of Hollywood B-movies, numerous affairs and an immature lifestyle of “horsing around” supported by the guys now universally known as The Memphis Mafia. Linda Gail provides a little insight, but more than anything else, she delivers this Jerry Lee.
The content was at times very sad as the well known story of Elvis’s downward trajectory is told. While this has an artistically interesting mirroring effect to Elvis’s own isolation, it harms a biography since you get littl Unfortunately, this book isn’t nearly as good as its predecessor.
More importantly, Careless Love continues to show that Guralnick ‘gets’ what Elvis Presley was trying to do as an artist: It’s terribly sad but, as with the first half of the book, compellingly readable – not sensationalising or whitewashing, but trying to understand. I am nearly …more I wouldn’t categorize myself as a big fan of Elvis – I enjoyed his music, but I’m pretty clear eyed about him as a person and entertainer.

Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley
And who needs a book like that? Written with grace, sensitivity, and passion, Careless Love is a unique contribution to our understanding of American popular culture and the nature of success, giving us true insight at last into one of the most misunderstood public figure of our times Peter Guralnick had considerable ground to cover in his sequel to Last Train To Memphis.
As long as they don’t say “no” Elvis remains forever young and they remain on the payroll. This is a incisive, chilling portrait of a man who gained and lost everything. This second half of Guralnick’s huge biography if Elvis looks at how he threw it all away, becoming increasingly overwhelmed by drug addiction and mental unmaming.
After his mother’s death, he surrounded himself with paid friends because he did not want to be alone, ever. The drugs, the objectification of women he didn’t respect his marriage at allthe pain from losing his mom, retreating to his room all the time, ekvis Memphis Mafia always hanging around him like puppy careleas waiting for the next car he’d buy them.
Guralnick makes us care enough about Elvis careleas the book to feel like King Lear set in Memphis, so readers feel the uneasy emotions that accompany watching a good man experience a slow, painful slide while clinging to values we admire all the way down.
But the situation was never straightforward and an interesting question of judgment arose when Barbra Streisand and Jon Peters approached Presley to play opposite her in the re-make of A Star Is Born. From reading this book you get the sense of the entourage that was formed around him and the fuzzy relationships that were preslley between being friend, family, and employee.
Whoever joined this group, all had to change their sleeping habits and exchange day for night.

I stayed watching them for an hour and left, unable to think of anything else. There’s nothing strange in this, because after the first minute I knew that we were linked, that something infinitely lost and distant kept pulling us together. It was their quietness that made me lean toward them fascinated the first time I saw the axolotls.
