The problem is that 12 step programs are not effective.

That said, the part that resonated with me most was how our upbringing can influence the traits that we have as adults. Facing Codependence: What It Is, Where It Comes from, How It Sabotages Our Lives

Although, the definition of childhood abuse is so widely defined that the claim that the whole world population has been abused as a child, would be true indeed!

I recommend this book to both therapists wanting to learn about this clinical issue as well as to those struggling with codependence in their lives.

I had several problems with this book, first being that I don’t agree with the disease model. My long running theory is that we are all addicts, and that the majority of our problems come from not understanding why we feel compelled to do things and our inability to fcaing our track record after engaging in those behaviors. The books text appears to be clean.

Apr 17, Kate rated it really liked it Shelves: This distinction Many addicts who have read this book will claim that almost the whole world population is codependent. The main thing that bothered me was that the scope of how codepenxence defined abuse was so broad that we codepenxence must be perpetrators.

The focuses on defining and recognizing codependence rather than how to correct it which I had been expecting so I finished the book mellpdy for more on that subject. While it has a lot of information about codependency, the presentation seems to suggest that basically everyone is codependent to some degree or another which I imagine is partly true.

It is my top choice to recommend for my psychiatric patients with this problem.

It was very useful for me personally to understand that clinginess and love-addiction are not the only traits of codependence, but also tendencies codwpendence create emotional barriers, inability to acknowledge one’s own needs and enmeshing others’ emotions with your own, among other things.

Apr 02, Carolyn rated it liked it Shelves: Melldy was I’d like to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but that wouldn’t quite be accurate. She talks about boundaries, which I think are hugely undervalued.

So pretty much this book excluded atheists from her model of a recovery Jan 03, Amanda rated it it was amazing Shelves: Facing Codependence By Pia Mellody. What makes Biblio different? I would say one or two chapters were really useful the rest was a bit OTT and focussed on her issues, being a perfectionist, controlling etc.

An extremely intriguing, insightful and enlightening read that has guided me towards a valuable understanding of the actions, reactions and motivations of certain individuals I have encountered in life. When I first started it, I was really put off by the idea that the reason behind codependence was rooted in child abuse, be it sexual, verbal, intellectual, spiritual, or emotional.

Sep 05, Allison rated it liked it. I lost a lot of confidence in the author when she described some of her own dysfunction, because it seemed so incomprehensible from someone who was claiming to codependejce an authority on the topic having to count light bulbs to determine if too many were on springs to mind.

And finally, if you didn’t grow up in this type of dysfunction, but a loved one did, then this is worth the read to help understand what dynamics might presently be operating in your relationship. Writing in plain, straight forward language, without resorting to a first grade reading level, she identifies the core characteristics of codependency and leads us on codepfndence path of healing.
