Some Notes on a Nonentity. This one is particularly captivating. Starts out OK, ends poorly. I’d never run across this story before and damned if it isn’t one of Lovecraft’s best.
Oh yes, Lovecraft outdoes himself. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon lovecrqft human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore.

Feb 20, Marco rated it it was ok Shelves: It’s a little uneven: The only knowledge the narrator has of the outside world, is from his reading of the “antique books” that line the walls of his castle. An ethnologist visits the town of Binger, Oklahoma in to investigate a mound, which is said to be haunted by a man by day and a headless woman by night.
It sounds like a historian wrote some LOL fanfic, aggravated by the insistent use of ‘Tulu versus Cthulhu. At the onset of the story, it is revealed that he has lived for years in the castle but cannot recall any person ever being there except for himself. Lists with This Book. Part of the reason is the extremely slow build as well as well of it just not being all that horrific when one compares his other stories. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity.
Lovecraft Encyclopedia finds this analysis to be exaggerated, but suggests that the story “may possibly be indicative of HPL’s own self-image, particularly the image of one who always thought himself ugly and whose mother told at least one individual about her son’s ‘hideous’ face. The story begins very strongly, with a plot that’s full of true terror. There are certain details about the society’s slow decline that are horrific in their very nature and decadence, and would have been more so at the time of Lovecraft’s writing.
